The children are taught in three class groupings. These class grouping are decided by the Headteacher in consultation with the parents and / or carers and this is generally based upon the age of the child. The Chicks and Cygnets groups are currently combined into one class, with children joining the Swans class at the start of either the Autumn or Spring term of their pre-Reception year. Children in the Swans class are supported in their transition to Primary School in a number of ways, including welcoming visits from their new class teachers, giving the children opportunities to role-play and talk about starting Primary school, as well as providing schools with detailed reports.
Although the children are separated for the main part of the morning we do like all the children to come together for special occasions such as festivals, birthdays and often at playtime. Our current Chicks and Cygnets class allows opportunities for the younger children to aspire to the older ones and an opportunity to promote an awareness of the needs of the younger children amongst the older children who learn to nurture others and feel ‘important’ as role models.
