Vladimir Shappo was born on February 4, 1949 in the village of Vidzy, Vitebsk region. His parents were communist party officials, therefore the family moved around a great deal. Vladimir spent his childhood in different towns and villages of the Vitebsk region in the north of Belarus – Vidzy, Polotsk, Braslav, Miory, Ushachi, Shumilino, Sharkovschina, he often visited his grandmother Helen in Moscow. The contrast between the Russian capital and small Jewish Belarusian-Polish towns left a lasting impression. In 1967-1972 studied at the faculty of graphic arts of Vitebsk State Pedagogical University (former art school founded by M. Chagall). Teachers – F. Gumen, Y. Krasovsky , I. Stoliarov. In his student days he started to collect material traveling around Russia (North, Polar region, Kamchatka), Central Asia, but native country (the regions of the Dvina river, Braslav lakes) and childhood became the main creative themes. Vladimir has been exhibiting his art since 1975; he works in water colours, pen and ink, charcoal pencil, acrylic, mixed media. He has been a member of the Belarusian Union of Artists since 1989. From 1975 – 2000 he taught painting, composition and the history of art in the children’s art school in Novopolotsk. Since 1980 he has been a member of the City Arts Council of Novopolotsk. He is married and a father of four children.

At the present time Vladimir keeps developing his previous themes in graphic art and also works on a new ones devoted to the 20th century - “Leaders, toilets, cripples”, and continues with his watercolour series “The Dvina – a river of time”.
